Why did my app downloads suddenly drop? A diagnosis checklist

Deep breath. In practice, half of "sudden drops" aren't drops — they're reporting lag, weekends, or a traffic source ending on schedule. Rule those out first, then walk the funnel top-down: impressions → tap-through → conversion. Whichever stage moved is your diagnosis; everything below it is just the echo.

Step 0: the boring explanations (check these first)

Step 1: did impressions fall? (visibility problem)

Fewer people saw you. If tap-through and conversion held steady while impressions sank, your listing is fine — your reach broke. Usual suspects: a competitor displaced you on a money keyword, a metadata change you shipped started re-indexing turbulence (check your own change dates first — the call is often coming from inside the house), or search volume itself declined seasonally. Fix lives in keywords and rankings, not in your screenshots.

Step 2: did tap-through fall? (search card problem)

People saw you and scrolled past. Impressions steady, page views down — the tap-through leak. A searcher sees your icon, name, subtitle, rating and first screenshots; if TTR dropped, one of those five changed or a competitor's card got better next to yours. A slipping star rating is the classic silent killer here — nothing on your side changed, but 4.2 next to their 4.8 reads differently than it did a month ago.

Step 3: did conversion fall? (product page problem)

People opened your page and left. Page views steady, downloads down — study the conversion benchmarks and your product page: screenshots, price framing, reviews on display. Also check deletions — a conversion drop plus a deletion spike after a release usually means the update itself disappointed, and word travels through ratings fast.

The discipline that makes next time painless

This whole checklist compresses to one habit: know which stage moved. A blended downloads number can't tell you that — the same −30% has three different causes with three different fixes. FunnelHound exists for exactly this moment: the funnel from App Store Connect on your iPhone, each stage side by side, benchmarks drawn on, deletions visible, your change dates marked as milestones. The panic refresh, replaced by a diagnosis.

Next drop, know which stage broke in 30 seconds

FunnelHound shows impressions, tap-through, installs and deletions side by side — so a drop comes with its diagnosis attached.

Data notes: App Store Connect reporting lag and weekday patterns are standard Apple behavior as of 2026. Category seasonality varies — verify against your own peer percentiles before drawing conclusions. The "check your own change dates first" advice is autobiographical.
