How to market an iOS app with no budget (the unsexy playbook)

No ads money is a constraint with a silver lining: it forces you into the channels that compound instead of the ones that stop when the card declines. The playbook below is ordered by return on hours — and it's running on this very site, so you're reading the receipts.

Hour one through ten: ASO, obviously

Search is the only marketing channel that works while you sleep and costs exactly nothing. Before any outreach: title with the primary keyword first, subtitle carrying the second promise, keyword field filled to 100 without waste, and the free wins most apps skip — English (U.K.) and friends are extra indexed keyword fields you already speak. This is the foundation everything else feeds: every other channel in this playbook ends with someone searching your name or your category, and ASO decides what they find.

The directory afternoon (it's an SEO play)

Submit to the launch directories — Product Hunt, AlternativeTo, SaaSHub, Indie Hackers, the long tail. Honest expectations: downloads trickle, backlinks stay. A sweep of listings feeds your site's authority, which feeds Google rankings, which feeds branded store searches for months. One focused afternoon, permanent residue. While you're at it, give the app a real website with an email box — the list you own is the only audience no algorithm can take away.

Communities: answer, never announce

The zero-budget channel everyone burns by doing it backwards. Nobody in r/iosdev or a Discord wants your launch post; everybody appreciates the person who answered their actual question well. The discipline: find threads where your expertise genuinely helps, give the complete answer, mention your app only when it is the answer — and one good reply a day beats ten drive-by links. Slow, human, and it builds the rarest asset: people who bring you up when you're not in the room.

Build in public (ratio matters)

Sharing real numbers, real failures and real ship-days grows an audience of peers — the people who amplify your launch because they watched the grind. It compounds slowly and it's free. One warning from experience: build more than you post. The moment content production outweighs shipping, you've become a creator with an app-shaped prop, and audiences smell it.

What to skip at $0

The part that makes free channels work: measurement

Zero-budget channels pay in weeks, not days — which means the difference between "this is working" and "I'm shouting into a well" is a funnel you actually watch. Directory day, community answers, a build-in-public post that traveled: each one should show up as impressions and installs, dated and compared. FunnelHound marks the milestones and shows the funnel from App Store Connect, so your hours get the same accountability your dollars would have. Free marketing isn't free — it costs time, and time deserves a scoreboard too.
