FunnelHound vs keyword tools: not actually a fight
Plot twist for a comparison page: these tools aren't competitors. Keyword tools (Astro, AppTweak and friends) tell you which bets to place. FunnelHound tells you how the bets paid. The actual problem: most devs own three of the first kind and zero of the second — all picks, no scoreboard.
What a keyword tool actually does
The good ones are genuinely good. They estimate search popularity and difficulty per keyword, per country, so you stop guessing what people type into the App Store. They track your rank on chosen terms. They show competitors' keyword coverage. Astro does this beautifully for indie budgets — I use it for FunnelHound's own ASO, which makes this the friendliest "vs" page ever written. The tools comparison ranks the options; the keyword field guide covers shipping the picks without wasting characters.
Where the keyword tool's story ends
The dashboard says you climbed from #40 to #12. Champagne? Not yet. A rank tracker watches Apple's search results from outside. It cannot see your data: whether anyone actually typed that phrase, saw your icon, tapped, installed, or — the detail your rent cares about — paid. Rank #12 on a keyword with real demand is a business. Rank #6 on a phrase nobody searches is a participation trophy. From outside the store, those two look identical.
Where FunnelHound's story starts
FunnelHound reads the inside data — your App Store Connect account, through Apple's official API, key stored in your Keychain. Impressions → installs → purchases, with deletions and category benchmarks, on your iPhone. Ship the keywords the research tool suggested, mark the date as a milestone, and two weeks later the funnel answers the only question that matters: did it work? No keyword suggestions. No rank charts. Just the scoreboard.
The loop, complete
- Research (keyword tool): find demand you can win. Popularity high, difficulty low, per country.
- Ship (you): title, subtitle, keyword field — no repeats, filled to 100.
- Measure (FunnelHound): did search impressions step up? Did installs follow? Did money?
- Repeat: keep winners, replace losers after week six — with evidence, not vibes.
Run research without measurement and you're placing bets and never checking the race. Run measurement without research and you're watching a scoreboard of a game you're not playing. One of each. That's the whole stack.
Your keyword tool picks. FunnelHound scores.
Close the loop: impressions, installs and purchases from App Store Connect, with a milestone on the day you shipped the new keywords.
