Do Apple Search Ads boost organic rankings?
The honest three-parter: Apple confirms nothing, the reported halo is consistent enough to take seriously, and the lift usually fades when spend stops. Paid installs can push a keyword up the charts; whether it stays up depends on the listing underneath. Rented rank is still rent.
The mechanism (plausible, unconfirmed)
Organic rank on a keyword responds to signals like download velocity on that term and how those users behave after install. An ASA campaign manufactures exactly that: real people, searching the real keyword, installing your real app. From the algorithm's seat, paid installs look a lot like popularity. Developers keep reporting the same shape — run a "Maximize Conversions" campaign, watch organic positions on the targeted terms firm up; pause it, watch them sag. No Apple doc blesses this. The pattern survives anyway, which is roughly the epistemic status of everything in ASO (see: hard paywalls).
Why the halo fades — and when it doesn't
Velocity is a flow, not a level. Stop the campaign and the manufactured installs stop; rank drifts back toward what your organic listing earns on its own. The exception is the interesting part: if the boosted position exposed your app to searchers who tapped, installed and stuck, the organic flywheel can catch — higher rank → more organic impressions → more installs → rank holds. Whether it catches depends on the funnel underneath: a weak search card or leaky product page turns ad spend into a subsidy for a listing that can't hold the room. Ads amplify what's there. They don't fix what isn't.
The trap nobody mentions: brand cannibalization
Before crediting ASA with genius numbers, split out installs from people who searched your exact app name. Those users were coming anyway; the ad just charged you a toll on your own front door. Defensive brand bidding is legitimate when competitors camp on your name — otherwise, "great ASA performance" is often your own organic demand wearing a receipt.
The other gift: ASA is free keyword research
Even at zero spend, Apple Search Ads shows search popularity scores for any keyword — real Apple demand data, no crawler estimates. And a cheap discovery campaign surfaces the actual phrases people typed before installing: keyword research for the price of lunch, feeding straight into the keyword field. Some of the smartest indie use of ASA never aims at scale at all — launch, let ASO show which markets and terms have signal, then point small campaigns only where organic already proved demand.
Testing the halo on your app
- Baseline: two weeks of organic search impressions and rank on one target keyword. No other changes in flight — this is one experiment, not a launch party.
- Run: a campaign on that keyword only, long enough to gather real installs.
- Stop, keep watching: two more weeks. The after-spend period is the entire answer — held rank was earned, decayed rank was rented.
- Judge on organic search impressions, not blended downloads — paid installs pollute the total while the campaign runs (the measurement discipline applies in full).
