App Store screenshots that convert: show the outcome, not the interface
Most screenshots explain the interface. The best ones explain the outcome — what life looks like after the download. Your first screenshot does most of the selling (plenty of visitors never swipe), captions must read at thumbnail size without zooming, and the whole set moves exactly one metric: conversion. Not rankings. Let's build the set.
What screenshots can and cannot move
Get the physics straight before spending a weekend in Figma. Screenshot captions are not indexed for search — the myth refuses to die, but rank lives in title, subtitle and keyword field. What screenshots move: page-view-to-download conversion, and — since the first ones render right in search results — tap-through. Beautiful screenshots on a page nobody finds fix nothing; that's a keyword problem wearing a design costume.
Frame one: the whole ballgame
Treat the first screenshot like a billboard, because that's the reading distance. One idea. The strongest benefit, stated as an outcome: not "Dashboard view" but the moment the app pays for itself — the leak found, the answer surfaced, the thing fixed. Show the product doing its winning move, not its menu. If a stranger can't say what your app does for them from frame one at thumbnail size, frame one failed, and frames two through ten never got their audience.
The rest of the set
- One idea per frame. A screenshot with three captions is a screenshot with zero captions.
- Captions legible without zooming. Big type, high contrast, five to eight words. Users scroll at the speed of doubt.
- Benefit first, feature second. "Catch the leak before it costs you" beats "Funnel visualization". The feature is evidence; the benefit is the argument.
- Real UI, honestly framed. Device frames and background art are fine; screens that don't exist in the app are a refund generator and a review magnet.
- Order by argument. Outcome → how it works → proof (ratings, numbers) → depth for the diggers who swipe to the end.
Localize the pitch, not just the pixels
Screenshots are part of localization too: a caption that lands in English may be wallpaper in Tokyo. Rewrite the pitch per market — the outcome people care about shifts with culture more than the feature list does. A user in Brazil should feel the screenshots were made in Brazil, not run through a translator on export day.
Ship it like an experiment
Apple's Product Page Optimization will A/B test screenshot sets against your live page — the cleanest verdict available, so use it when you can. Otherwise it's the standard measurement discipline: date the change, watch conversion (only conversion — screenshots can't touch impressions), judge after two weeks on a similar traffic mix. FunnelHound marks the ship date as a milestone and shows conversion before/after from App Store Connect, so the Figma weekend gets a number at the end of it.
