Your onboarding is an ASO decision: first session, retention, rankings
The store funnel doesn't end at install: it ends at kept. The first session decides whether an install becomes a user or a deletion, and retention-shaped signals feed rankings. Which makes onboarding a store strategy wearing a UI costume.
The chain nobody draws on their funnel
Install → first session → keep-or-delete → retention signal → ranking → impressions → installs. It's a loop, not a line: every onboarding failure quietly taxes tomorrow's search visibility. This is why two apps with identical listings diverge over months: the one whose installs stick compounds; the one bleeding day-one deletes runs the same ASO uphill. Your screenshots made a promise; the first session is where the store finds out if it was true.
Time-to-value: the only onboarding metric that matters
Count the seconds between first launch and the moment the app does the thing the screenshots sold. Everything in onboarding either shortens that time or pads it. The padding is familiar: a six-screen intro carousel explaining what the user already believed (they installed, didn't they?), an account wall before any value, a survey asking questions the app could infer. Every screen between launch and value is a place to lose someone who was, thirty seconds ago, convinced. Deliver the win first; explain later, if ever: the app that shows beats the app that tells.
The two classic first-session killers
- Permission ambushes. Notifications, tracking, location: requested cold at first launch, before the app earned anything. Each system dialog is a mini paywall priced in trust; ask in context, at the moment the permission unlocks something the user just tried to do, and acceptance rates double while first-session abandons fall.
- The paywall before the wow. Covered in depth in the hard paywall guide: gating before value samples users at their least convinced and manufactures the delete-within-minutes pattern. After the first win, the same paywall converts better and deletes less: same price, different moment, different app.
Measuring onboarding like the ASO change it is
Onboarding work gets the same discipline as a keyword swap: date the change, watch the metrics it can move, judge in weeks. The metrics here: deletions-to-installs ratio in the days after install, and your day-1/7/28 retention percentiles against category peers: below the 25th percentile, onboarding outranks every metadata experiment on your list. Watch the loop close, too: a real onboarding fix shows up first in deletions, then in retention, then (weeks later) in the impressions curve, as the store notices your installs started sticking. Mark the milestone and let the chain testify.
See whether your installs stick or bounce
FunnelHound puts deletions next to installs from App Store Connect: the first-session verdict, visible daily, milestone-marked.
Get FunnelHoundData notes: retention's role in ranking is replicated practitioner observation, not documented Apple behavior. Retention benchmarks vary hard by category: peer percentiles in App Store Connect beat any global figure. Deletion data covers opted-in devices and lags 2–3 days.
